1901 - Tony Hulman, who bought the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1945 and made the Indy 500 one of foremost events in sports; in Terre Haute, IN

 

1909 - Max Baer, heavy hitting boxer who was the world heavyweight champion 1934-35; in Omaha, NE
1919 - Gretchen Fraser, who became the first American woman to win a skiing gold medal when she capture the giant slalom in 1948; in Tacoma, WA

1905 - Bowler Falls Half-Pin Short of Perfect

James Blackstone of Seattle needed just a final strike to achieve a perfect 300 game. Nine pins went down and the tenth one broke, but part of it remained standing. The American Bowling Congress credited him with a 299 1/2 score, which is much rarer than a 300.

1949 - Pep Regains Title from Saddler

In a renewal of one of boxing's greatest matchups, Willie Pep won a 15-round decision in Madison Square Garden to regain the world featherweight championship from Sandy Saddler.

1968 - Teams Combine for Record 88 Free Throws

Morehead State and the University of Cincinnati combined for an NCAA record that still stands, making a total of 88 free throws in 111 attempts.

1971 - Beliveau Scores His 500th Goal

Montreal Canadien center Jean Beliveau scored his 500th career goal in a 6-2 victory over the Minnesota North Stars. He retired after the season with a total of 507.

1998 - Court Rules PGA Golfer Can Use Cart

Professional golfer Casey Martin, victim of a circulatory problem in his right leg, won the right to use a golf cart during PGA Tour events. It was the first suit in which the Americans with Disabilities Act was applied to a professional sport.
