1913 - Mel Allen, long-time broadcaster for the New York Yankees, known for his "Going, going, gone!" home run call; in Birmingham, AL

1923 - Jay Hebert, golfer who won the 1960 PGA Championship; in St. Martinville, LA

1887 - Cubs Sell King for $10,000

The Chicago Cubs sold Mike "King" Kelly to Boston for a record $10,000. Kelly held out, demanding a share of the purchase price, and the Boston team finally paid him a $3,000 bonus.

1934 - Stars Come Out to Benefit Bailey

In a forerunner of the NHL All-Star Game, the Toronto Maple Leafs played a game against stars from other teams to raise money for Ace Bailey, who had suffered a fractured skull and brain damage in a December game. Toronto won, 7-3.

1951 - Sugar Ray Wins Middleweight Title

Sugar Ray Robinson won the world middleweight championship by knocking out Jake LaMotta in the 15th round at Chicago.

1988 - Bobby Allison Beats Son at Daytona

Fifty-year-old Bobby Allison became the oldest driver ever to win the Daytona 500, averaging 137.531 mph. His 26-year-old son, Davey, finished second.
