1926 - Lenglen Beats Wills in High-Priced Match
In their only meeting, France's Suzanne Lenglen defeated Helen Wills of the United States in straight sets at the Carlton Tennis Club in Cannes. Tickets went for as much as $50 apiece, which was a pretty good piece of change in those days.

1962 - Honus Wagner Retires From Baseball at 77
Hall of Fame shortstop Honus Wagner officially retired from baseball at the age of 77 after serving as a coach with the Pittsburgh Pirates for 20 years. The Pirates announced they would retire the number, 33, that he wore as a coach. (They didn't wear numbers during his playing days.)

1968 - Doubles Teams Stage Longest Match
In a doubles match at the U. S. Indoor Championships, Mark Cox and Bob Wilson of England battled Charlie Pasarell and Bob Holmberg of the United States for 6 hours and 23 minutes, still the longest match in history. Cox and Wilson won, 26-24, 17-19, 30-28.

1970 - Frazier Beats Ellis for World Title
Joe Frazier beat WBA champion Jimmy Ellis on a TKO in the fifth round at Madison Square Garden to win the vacant world heavyweight championship.

1984 - Johnson Becomes Only U. S. Downhill Champion
Bill Johnson won the Olympic downhill skiing gold medal at Sarajevo to become the first U. S. champion in the event.
