1946 - Gardella Defects to Mexico

Outfielder Danny Gardella announced that he was leaving the New York Giants to play in the Mexican League. Gardella was blacklisted from major league baseball and eventually won a settlement in a civil suit because of the blacklisting.

1966 - Joe Paterno Takes Over at Penn State

Penn State announced that assistant Joe Paterno would replace the retiring Rip Engle as head football coach. Thirty-three years later, Paterno is still there, boasting more than 300 victories and two national championships.

1977 - Rod Gilbert Scores 1,000th Point

Rod Gilbert scored a goal for the New York Rangers in a 5-2 loss to the Islanders, giving him 1,000 points for his NHL career.

1984 - Mahre Brothers Win Gold and Silver

Phil and Steve Mahre of the United States became the first brothers ever to win gold and silver medals in the same event at the Olympics. Phil won the gold in the slalom at Sarajevo and Steve claimed the silver.

1994 - Bonnie Blair Wins Third Straight 500-Meter Gold

Ebullient Bonny Blair won the 500-meter event at the Winter Olympics in Liljehammer, becoming the first speed skater to win the gold medal in the same event at three straight Olympics.
