English Major Walter Clopton Wingfield took out a patent on a new game he called "sphairistike." It was to become much better known, and much more popular, as lawn tennis.

1906 - Tommy Burns Wins Heavyweight Title

Tommy Burns beat Marvin Hart in a 20-round fight in Los Angeles to win the world heavyweight championship.

1980 - Heiden Finishes Five-Medal Sweep

Eric Heiden won the 5,000-meter speed skating event at Lake Placid for his fifth gold medal and fifth world record.

1990 - Texas Streak Ends at 183 Wins

Juliet Jackson hit six free throws down the stretch to give Arkansas an 82-77 upset win over the University of Texas. That ended the longest winning streak in the history of women's basketball at 183 games.
