1933 - NFL Owners Try to Increase Scoring
At their annual meeting, NFL owners approved three major rules changes aimed at increasing scores: Establishing "hash marks" 10 yards from the sidelines, moving goalposts from the end line to the goal line, and allowing a forward pass from anywhere behind the line of scrimmage.

1964 - Clay Wins Heavyweight Title
Cassius Clay stunned boxing experts by beating Sonny Liston for the world heavyweight championship at Miami Beach. The fight ended when Liston failed to come out for the eighth round, claiming a shoulder injury.

1977 - Maravich Sets Scoring Record for NBA Guards
Pistol Pete Maravich of the New Orleans Jazz scored 68 points, the NBA record for a guard until Michael Jordan hit 69 in a 1990 game.

1981 - Bruins and North Stars Combine for 84 Penalties
Playing in Boston Garden, the Boston Bruins and Minnesota North Stars set records by combining for 84 penalties totaling 406 minutes. Both teams were penalized 42 times, also an NHL record, and the North Stars set a record for one team with 211 minutes in penalties.
