Danny Needham and Patsy Kerrigan fought 100 rounds under the Marquis of Queensberry Rules in San Francisco. The fight was stopped and declared a draw after 6 hours and 39 minutes.

Sixteen-year-old amateur golfer Tiger Woods played in the Los Angeles Open. He was the youngest golfer to be invited to play a PGA tour event since Jack Nicklaus in 1957.
