The United States Olympic hockey team was trailing favored Czechoslovakia, 4-3, entering the final period of the gold medal hockey match. The underdogs then exploded for 6 goals to win, 9-4.

Jack Nicklaus shot a 281 to win the PGA Championship in Florida. That made him the first golfer to win each of the four modern grand slam events at least twice.
