Sonny Werblin, the owner of the New York Jets, brought instant credibility to the AFL by signing Alabama quarterback Joe Namath to a $400,000 contract, the highest in sports history at that time.

Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn announced that Ted Turner, owner of the Atlanta Braves, would be suspended for one year for tampering in the team's signing of free agent outfielder Gary Matthews.

1982 - 20 Straight Completions for Anderson
Ken Anderson completed a record 20 consecutive passes as the Cincinnati Bengals beat the Houston Oilers, 35-27, in the last game of the NFL season. The streak enabled Anderson to set another record with a 70.6 completion percentage for the year.

UCLA beat Arkansas, 17-3, in the Cotton Bowl to set an NCAA record with seven straight bowl victories.

1995 - Frazier Rides to Nebraska's Rescue
Nebraska quarterback Tommy Frazier was on the bench with an injury for most of the game, but he came in to lead the Cornhuskers to two fourth-quarter touchdowns, a 24-17 victory, and a national championship. The win gave Nebraska a 13-0 record.
