1681 - The Butcher Did It

The Duke of Albemarle staged the first recorded boxing match , between his footman and his butcher (names unknown). The butcher won.

1951 - Sounds Like a Halftime Score Today

The longest game in NBA history finally ended after six overtime periods, with the Indianapolis Olympians beating the Rochester Royals, 75-73. The game lasted nearly four hours.

1980 - Flyers Stretch Streak to 35

The Philadelphia Flyers scored two goals in the final period to beat the Buffalo Sabres, 5-3, extending their NHL record streak to 35 straight games without a loss (25 wins and 10 ties). The streak ended with a loss to the Minnesota North Stars the following night.

1994 - Nancy Kerrigan Attacked

Figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was hit on the right knee with an iron rod by an assailant on the eve of the U.S. championships. Tonya Harding, who won the title, was later accused of planning the attack with her husband and three others. Harding was placed on two years' probation, stripped of her title, and banned from the U. S. Figure Skating Association for life.

1995 - Lenny Wilkens Passes Auerbach

The Atlanta Hawks beat Washington 112-90, to give Coach Lenny Wilkens his 939th NBA victory, breaking Red Auerbach's former record. Auerbach's comment: "He's a super guy. He's a Hall of Fame player. He's a great coach and a good friend. Hey, who else would you want to break it?"
