The NCAA Football Rules Committee, in an effort to reduce injuries by opening up the game, legalized the forward pass.

1921 -Landis Becomes Baseball's Czar

In the wake of the "Black Sox Scandal," Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis was named the first commissioner of baseball and given virtually unlimited powers.

1946 - Champion Rams Move to LA

At the annual meeting of NFL owners, the Cleveland Rams were given permission to move to Los Angeles, becoming the first major sports franchise on the West Coast.

1969 - Namath's Guarantee Is Good

Joe Namath guaranteed the New York Jets, 17-point underdogs to the Baltimore Colts, would win Super Bowl III, and his team delivered with a 16-7 victory, the AFL's first in three tries.

1975 - Steelers Win First of Four

Franco Harris, who gained 158 yards on 34 carries, was named MVP as the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Minnesota Vikings, 16-6 in Super Bowl IX. It was the first of four Super Bowl victories for the Steelers and the third loss for the Vikings in three appearances.

1986 - Savard Ties Fastest Goal Record

Denis Savard of the Chicago Blackhawks tied the NHL record for the fastest goal at the start of a period by scoring at the 4-second mark of the third in a 4-2 victory over the Hartford Whalers.

1992 - 141 Points Isn't Nearly Enough

DeVry Institute scored 141 points but still managed to lose by 117. That's right, Troy State wiped out DeVry, 258-141.
