Willie O'Ree, called up by the Boston Bruins from the minor leagues, became the first black player in NHL history.

1976 - Steelers Take Second Super Bowl Win

The Pittsburgh Steelers won their second straight Super Bowl, 21-17, over the Dallas Cowboys. Wide receiver Lynn Swann, who caught 4 passes for 161 yards, was named the MVP.

1983 - Jim Thorpe's Medals Are Returned

The International Olympic Committee returned Jim Thorpe's Olympic medals to his family. Thorpe won medals in the 1912 pentathlon and decathlon, but they were taken from him because he had once played semi-pro baseball.

Boris Becker defeated Omar Camporese of Italy in the longest match in Australian Open history, 5 hours and 11 minutes.
