1947 - NFL Approves Sudden Death
NFL owners voted to allow a sudden-death overtime in playoff games. The rule wasn't needed until the Baltimore Colts' famous 1958 championship victory over the New York Giants.Top of Page
1962 - Jackie Robinson Elected to Hall of Fame
Jackie Robinson, the first black player in major-league history, also became the first black elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1981 - Bossy Ties Rocket Richard With 50 in 50
Two days after his 24th birthday, Mike Bossy gave himself a belated present. The New York Islander entered a game against Quebec needing two goals to tie Rocket Richard's record of 50 goals in 50 games. Bossy got his 49th goal with less than five minutes left and he scored his 50th with 1:29 remaining.

1982 - 49ers Get First Super Bowl Win
The San Francisco 49ers jumped to a 20-0 lead and managed to hold off the Cincinnati Bengals, 26-20, for their first Super Bowl championship. Joe Montana won the first of his three MVP awards.

1990 - Big House Gaines Collects 800th Victory
Clarence "Big House" Gaines collected the 800th victory of his college coaching career as his Winston-Salem State team beat Livinstone, 79-70.
