1924 - The Winter Olympics Begin

The Winter Olympic Festival, now known as the first Winter Olympics, opened in Chamonix, France. Sixteen nations sent 294 athletes to compete in five sports and thirteen events.

1981 - Wildcard Raiders Win Super Bowl

Castoff quarterback Jim Plunkett was named the MVP in Super Bowl XV as the wildcard Oakland Raiders beat the Philadelphia Eagles, 27-10. Plunkett passed for 261 yards and three touchdowns.

1987 - Super Bowl MVP Simms Is Nearly Perfect

The New York Giants got their second Super Bowl victory, 39-20, over the Denver Broncos, after trailing 10-9 at halftime. Quarterback Phil Simms, who completed 22 of 25 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns, was the MVP.

1988 - Green Scores 5 Millionth Point

Rickey Green of the Utah Jazz hit a three-point shot at the third-quarter buzzer against the Cleveland Cavaliers to record the 5 millionth point in NBA history.

1998 - Broncos Snap Super Bowl Streaks

The Denver Broncos, 14-point underdogs, beat the Green Bay Packers, 31-24, in Super Bowl XXXII to snap the NFC's 13-game winning streak and their own 4-game losing streak. Running back Terrell Davis was the game's MVP.
