1919 - Dempsey Wins Heavyweight Title
Jack Dempsey won the world heavyweight championship with a 3rd-round knockout of the 6-foot-6, 250-pound Jess Willard at Toledo Ohio. Promoter Tex Rickard immediately began billing Dempsey as "Jack the Giant Killer."

1939 - Fans Honor Gehrig for Last Time
Lou Gehrig wore his Yankee uniform for the last time, as 60,000 fans turned at Yankee Stadium to honor him. Gehrig delivered a farewell speech containing the famous line, "Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth."

1973 - Riva Ridge Becomes Millionaire
Riva Ridge set a world record of 1:52 3/5 for 1 3/16 mile and also became the 12th thoroughbred in history to win more than a million dollars by winning the Brooklyn Handicap.

1980 - Ryan Notches 3,000th Strikeout
Houston pitcher Nolan Ryan fanned Cesar Geronimo of the Cincinnati Reds to record his 3,000th career strikeout in an 8-1 victory.

1987 Martina Wins 8th Wimbledon Title
Martina Navratilova beat Steffi Graf, 7-5 and 6-3, to win her sixth straight Wimbledon singles championship and her eighth overall. She went on to win the tournament for a ninth time in 1990.
