1879 - Dwight Davis, Harvard tennis star who donated the Davis Cup for international play; in St. Louis

 

1923 - John McKay, who coached Southern California to four national championships and was the first coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; in Everettsville, WV

 

1939 - Mike Shannon, three-time All-Star outfielder and third baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals; in St. Louis

1887 - Columbia Boat Wins at Henley

A Columbia University four-oared crew beat Hertford College to win the Visitors Challenge Cup, becoming the first American boat to win an event at London's Henley Regatta.

1947 - Doby Becomes AL's First Black

Centerfielder Larry Doby became the first black player in the American League when he pinch hit for the Cleveland Indians in a 6-5 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Doby went on to become the second black manager in major league history and is now in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1969 - Laver Wins Fourth Wimbledon Singles Title

Rod Laver defeated fellow Australian John Newcombe, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, to become the first male player to win four Wimbledon singles championships.

1998 - Clemens Reaches 3,000-Strikeout Mark

Toronto Blue Jay pitcher Roger Clemens collected his 3,000th career strikeout. The victim was Randy Winn of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Clemens was the 11th pitcher to reach that mark.
