1901 - Cy Young Wins 300th Game
Cy Young of the Boston Red Sox beat the Philadelphia Athletics, 5-3, for his 300th career victory. Young retired after the 1911 season with 511 wins.

1930 - Jones Completes Golf's Grand Slam
Amateur golfer Bobby Jones beat McDonald Smith by 2 strokes to win the U. S. Open, becoming the first and only golfer ever to win all four grand slam events in a single year. He had previously won the British Open and the U. S. and British Amateur championships.

1979 - Promotion Demolishes White Sox Game
The second game of a scheduled doubleheader was demolished during the Chicago White Sox promotion, Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park. Fans were asked to bring unwanted disco records, to be burned on the field between games. The result was a near riot, featuring several small fires in the stands, and the second game had to be forfeited to the Detroit Tigers.

1984 - Carlton Collects 100th Strikeout Again
For the 18th consecutive season, Steve Carlton of the Philadelphia Phillies recorded his 100th strikeout in a 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds. That tied Walter Johnson's record. Carlton finished his career with a record 3,813 strikeouts.
