1935 - Tenley Albright, the first American woman to win a gold medal in figure skating, in 1956; in Newton Center, MA

1893 - First 18-Hole Course Opens

America's first 18-hole golf course was opened in Wheaton, IL. The designer was Charles Blair McDonald of Chicago, who won the first major U. S. tournament in 1894 and went on to design many more courses.

1948 - Seerey Hits Four Home Runs

Chicago White Sox outfielder Pat Seerey hit four home runs in an 11-inning, 12-11 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics. Seery had only 86 homers in seven major-league seasons.

1951 - Jersey Joe Becomes Heavyweight Champ

In his fifth attempt, Jersey Joe Walcott won the world heavyweight championship with a 7th-round knockout of Ezzard Charles. At the time, the 37-year-old Walcott was the oldest heavyweight titleist in history.

1970 - Mays Collects 3,000th Career Hit

Willie Mays singled against Mike Wegener of the Montreal Expos to record his 3,000th major league hit. His San Francisco Giants won the game, 10-1. Mays retired after the 1973 season with a total of 3,283 hits.
