1923 - Alex Hannum, Basketball Hall of Fame coach who won titles in both the NBA and the ABA; in Los Angeles

 

1927 - Billy Gardner, who spent 10 years as a player and 6 years as a manager in the major leagues; in Waterford, CT

1877 - Gore Wins First Wimbledon Title

In the finals of the first Wimbledon tennis tournament, 200 spectators watched Spencer Gore beat W. Marshall, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4, to win the men's singles title. That was the only championship in the tourney.

1909 - First Unassisted Triple Play Recorded

Cleveland shortstop Neal Ball came up with the first unassisted triple play in major league history. Against the Boston Pilgrims (now the Red Sox), he caught Amby McConnell's line drive, stepped on second to double off a runner, and tagged out a second runner between first and second.

1910 - Cy Young Gets 500th Victory

Cy Young of Cleveland beat the Washington Nationals, 5-4, in 11 innings to collect his 500th career win. He retired with 511 victories. That's 95 more than Walter Johnson, who's in second place.

1926 - Hagen Sets 36-Hole Record of 132

In winning the Eastern Open, Walter Hagen set a new record of 132 for 36 holes, an average of 66 shots per round.

1927 - Ty Cobb Reaches 4,000-Hit Mark

Ty Cobb became the first player in major-league history to collect 4,000 hits. He retired after the 1928 with a career total of 4,191, which remained the major league record until Pete Rose broke it in 1985.
