1923 - Johnson Is First with 3,000 Strikeouts
Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators struck out five hitters in a 3-1 win over the Cleveland Indians, become the first pitcher with 3,000 career strikeouts.

1976 - Nadia Reaches Olympic Perfection
Fourteen-year-old Nadia Comaneci of Romania scored a 10 in the uneven parallel bars, becoming the first gymnast to get a perfect score at the Olympics. She ended up with seven perfect scores, three gold medals, a silver, and a bronze.

1984 - Whitworth Becomes Golf Victory Leader
With a victory in the Rochester Open, Kathy Whitworth collected her 85th professional win. She had previously been tied with Sam Snead for the most tournament victories by a professional golfer.

1990 - LeMond Wins Third Tour de France
For the third time in five years, Greg LeMond won the Tour de France. In 1986, he had become the first American to win the race. He won again in 1989 and made it two in a row in 1990.
