1959 - Plans for New Major League Announced
Plans to form a third major league, the Continental, with Branch Rickey as president, were announced by attorney William Shea. The league was never actually established but, because of the threat, the New York Mets and Houston Colt .45s (now the Astros) were awarded National League franchises. Shea Stadium in New York was named for Shea.

In a workout at Saratoga, Secretariat set records of 1 minute, 34 seconds for the mile and 1 minute, 47 4/5 seconds for 1 1/8 mile.

1987 - Woman Umpire Makes Debut
Pam Postema became the first woman ever to umpire at home plate in a major league game during an exhibition between the Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees. Postema umpired in the minor leagues from 1977 through 1988. Her sexual discrimination suit against major league baseball for denying her an opportunity at the highest level was settled out of court in 1997.
