Californian Penny Dean set a record of 7 hours and 40 minutes for the English Channel swim from England to France.

1983 - Garvey's Streak Ends at 1,208 Games
Steve Garvey's National League record streak of 1,208 games came to an end when the Dodger first baseman dislocated his left thumb in a collision at home plate during the first game of a doubleheader. Garvey was unable to appear in the second game against the Atlanta Braves.

At the Caribbean Championship meet in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Cuba's Javier Sotomayor became the first high jumper ever to clear 8 feet.
