John Lee Richmond of the Worcester National League club pitched baseball's first perfect game to beat Cleveland, 1-0.

1930 - Schmeling Becomes Heavyweight Champ
Max Schmeling of Germany won the vacant world heavyweight title when Jack Sharkey was disqualified for a low blow in the 4th round of their fight at Madison Square Garden.

1947 - Babe Zaharias Wins in England
Babe Didrikson Zaharias became the first U. S. golfer to win the British Ladies' Amateur championship.

1948 - Arcaro Takes 2nd Triple Crown
Eddie Arcaro rode Citation to the Triple Crown, winning the 80th Belmont Stakes in 2:28.2. Arcaro is the only jockey to win the Triple Crown twice; he had previously done it aboard Whirlaway in 1941.

1948 - Hogan Shoots Record 276 in Open
Ben Hogan won the first of his four U. S. Open golf championships, finishing with a record 276 at Riviera Country Club. He shattered the former record by five strokes.

1997 - MLB Begins Interleague Play
Interleague play began when the Texas Rangers took on the San Francisco Giants in a game won by the Giants, 4-3. Three other interleague games started later, all on the West Coast.
