Max Schmeling of Germany knocked out Joe Louis in the 12th round of their heavyweight fight at Madison Square Garden. It was the first loss of Louis's career.

1942 - Paul Waner Gets 3,000th Hit

Outfielder Paul Waner of the Pittsburgh Pirates collected his 3,000th career hit in a 7-6 victory over the Boston Braves.

1980 - Day Wins 7 of 8 at Churchill Downs

Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day tied a record by winning seven of eight races at Churchill Downs. He went on to win the Eclipse Award as outstanding jockey of the year.
