The New York Yankees announced that first baseman Lou Gehrig would be forced to retire because amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, now commonly known as "Lou Gehrig's disease."

1964 - Bunning Throws Perfect Game

Jim Bunning of the Philadelphia Phillies threw a perfect game to beat the New York Mets, 6-0. Appropriately, it was Father's Day, and Bunning is the father of seven children.

Detroit's Cesar Gutierrez got 7 hits in 7 at-bats, tying the record for a 9-inning game set by Wilbert Robinson in 1892.

Carlton Fisk of the Chicago White Sox hit his 307th career home run against the Yankees to set the American League record for most home runs by a catcher.
