1933 - 'Ambling Alp' Wins Heavyweight Title

Primo Carnera, the 6-foot-6, 260-pound Italian fighter nicknamed the "Ambling Alp," knocked out Jack Sharkey in the sixth round to win the world heavyweight championship.

1950 - U.S. Upsets England in Soccer

In World Cup soccer, the United States scored an astounding upset with a 1-0 victory over England. The country didn't another World Cup match until 1994.

1956 - 7-Foot Barrier Broken in High Jump

Charles Dumas cleared 7 feet, 5/8 inch at the U. S. Olympic trials in Los Angeles, becoming the first high jumper to break the 7-foot barrier.

1969 - Williams Sets NL Consecutive Game Record

The Chicago Cubs celebrated Billy Williams day at Wrigley Field, and so did Billy Williams. The Cubs outfielder played in his 896th consecutive game, breaking Stan Musial's National League record.

1990 - Stewart, Valenzuela Throw No-Hitters

A few hours after Dave Stewart of the Oakland As threw a no-hitter against the Toronto Blue Jays, Fernando Valenzuela of the Dodgers did the same to the St. Louis Cardinals. It was the first time in major league history that two complete game no-hitters were recorded on the same day.
