In his second defense of the heavyweight boxing championship, Primo Carnera won a 15-round decision over Tommy Loughran in Miami.

1949 - Joe Louis Announces Ring Retirement

Heavyweight champion Joe Louis announced his retirement after reigning for nearly 12 years and defending the title 30 times. However, he was forced to return to the ring in 1950 because he owed more than $1 million in taxes.

1973 - Robyn Smith Is First Woman Stakes Winner

In the Paumanok Handicap at Aqueduct, Robyn Smith rode North Star to victory, becoming the first woman jockey to win a stakes race.

1983 - Tamara McKinney Wins World Cup

Tamara McKinney won the overall World Cup championship, becoming the first U. S. woman skier to do so.

1988 - Gretzky Sets Career Assist Record

Edmonton center Wayne Gretzky got his 1,050th assist against the Los Angeles Kings, breaking Gordie Howe's career record in his 681st NHL game. It had taken Howe 1,767 games to notch 1,049.

1991 - TV Golf Fan Turns Azinger In

An alert but perhaps over-zealous television viewer, watching the Doral Ryder Open, saw Paul Azinger accidentally move a pebble with his foot while taking his stance. The viewer called in and Azinger was disqualified after officials reviewed videotapes.
