1860 - Arlie Latham, who spent 76 years in professional baseball, from playing at 15 to being the Yankee's pressbox custodian at 92; in West Lebanon, NH

 

1897 - Jackson Scholz, who won sprint gold medals in 1920 and 1924 and later wrote excellent sports stories for boys; in Buchanan, MI

 

1926 - Norm Van Brocklin, Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback and first coach of the Minnesota Vikings; in Eagle Butte, SD

 

1931 - Ted Marchibroda, NFL quarterback in the '50s, head coach in the '70s and '90s; in Franklin, PA

1869 - Red Stockings Launch Professional Baseball

The Cincinnati Red Stockings, baseball's first openly professional team, played their first game, beating Antioch College, 41-7.

1958 - Maurice Stokes Paralysed by Encephalitis

Maurice Stokes of the Rochester Royals collapsed during an NBA playoff game and fell into a coma, stricken with encephalitis that caused complete paralysis. After 12 years of grueling and painful rehabilitation, Stokes died of a heart attach at the age of 36.

1962 - Chamberlain Averages 50.4 Points a Game

Wilt Chamberlain finished the season with 4,029 points in 80 games, an average of 50.4 per game, easily the NBA record. No other player has scored more than 3,000 points in a season.
