1893 - Lord Stanley Donates Trophy
Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston, announced that he had spent 10 guineas (about $50 at the time) for a trophy to be presented to the hockey champion of Canada. Shortly afterward, he returned to England and he never saw a Stanley Cup game.

1945 - Rocket Is First to Score 50 Goals
Rocket Richard of the Montreal Canadiens scored his 50th goal of the season, becoming the first player in NHL history to reach that mark.

1953 - Braves' Move to Milwaukee Is Approved
National League owners approved the move of the Braves from Boston to Milwaukee. The first major-league franchise shift since 1903, it paved the way for the Dodgers and Giants to move to California.

1983 - Spinks Unifies Light-Heavy Title
World Boxing Association champion Michael Spinks unified the light heavyweight title by winning a decision over Dwight Braxton, the World Boxing Council champ.
