1894 - Montreal Wins First Stanley Cup Game

In the first Stanley Cup challenge game, the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association beat the Ottawa Generals, 3-1, to retain the trophy. Montreal had been awarded the Stanley Cup in 1892 and held it for two years before being challenged.

1984 - Trottier Scores in Record Time

Bryan Trottier of the New York Islanders scored just five seconds after the start of a game against the Boston Bruins, tying the NHL record.

1986 - Berbick Wins WBC Heavyweight Title

Trevor Berbick won a unanimous 15-round decision over Pinklon Thomas at Las Vegas to win the World Boxing Council version of the heavyweight championship.

1989 - Rozelle Announces Resignation

At the National Football League's annual meeting, Pete Rozelle surprised owners by announcing his retirement after 29 years as the league's commissioner.

1993 - Boat Crash Kills Two Cleveland Pitchers

Two Cleveland Indian pitchers, Steve Olin and Tim Crews, were killed when their boat hit a dock on Little Lake Nellie, Florida. A teammate, Bob Ojeda, was seriously injured, but he eventually returned to the Indians.
