1871 - First Pro Baseball League Begins Play
The National Association of Base Ball Players, the first professional league, began play as the Ft. Wayne Kekiongas beat Cleveland's Forest City Club, 2-0. Deacon White of Cleveland led off the game with a double, the league's first hit.

1975 - 1 Millionth Major League Run Recorded
Bob Watson of the Houston Astros scored the 1 millionth run in major league history against the San Francisco Giants. Watson was on base when Milt May homered.

1957 - Shoemaker Blows Derby Finish
One of the sport's greatest jockeys, Bill Shoemaker, committed one of the sport's greatest blunders. Riding Gallant Man to apparent victory in the Kentucky Derby, Shoemaker thought the 1/16 pole was the finish line and stood up in the stirrups, allowing Iron Liege to win.
