1913 - Notre Dame Beats Army in Air

In its first meeting with Army, underdog Notre Dame used the forward pass extensively for a surprisingly easy 35-13 victory. Gus Dorais completed 14 of 17 passes for 243 yards and 2 touchdowns. End Knute Rockne, who later became Notre Dame's first great coach, was the chief receiver. He and Dorais had spent the summer practicing pass routes and throws.

1938 - Seabiscuit Upsets War Admiral

George Woolf rode underdog Seabiscuit to a four-length victory over odds-on favorite War Admiral in a match race for a $15,000 purse at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. The time of 1:56 3/5 over 1 3/16 miles was a new track record.

1946 - Knicks Win BAA Opener

In the Basketball Association of America's first regular-season game, the New York Knickerbockers beat the Toronto Huskies, 68-66. The BAA became the National Basketball Association in 1949 after merging with the National Basketball League.

1959 - Plante Invents Goalie Mask

Goalie Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadiens stunned players and fans alike when he skated onto the ice wearing a face mask he'd made of fiberglass. After having seven more stitches taken in his face, Plante had decided that was enough. Within a relatively short time, all NHL goalies were wearing masks.
