1892 - Heffelfinger Is First Football Pro
To beef up its squad for the big game against the arch-rival Pittsburgh Athletic Club, the Allegheny Athletic Association paid $500 to former Yale All-American Pudge Heffelfinger, making him the first recorded professional player. He rewarded them by forcing a fumble and returning it for the game's only score.

1920 - Landis Becomes Baseball Czar
Major league baseball owners replaced the three-man commission system by hiring a single commissioner, Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, to rule the sport in the wake of the Black Sox Scandal of 1919. Given broad powers to police the sport, Landis became known as the "Czar of Baseball." He held the job until his death in 1944.

1988 - Sanders Sets NCAA TD Record
Barry Sanders of Oklahoma State scored five touchdowns in a 63-24 win over Kansas, giving him a new NCAA record of 31 touchdowns for the season. And he wasn't done yet. He scored 8 more touchdowns, extending the record to 39. He ended the season with 2,628 rushing yards, another NCAA record that still stands.
