1888 - Baseball Goes Around the World

A team of 20 major league all-star sailed from San Francisco to Hawaii on the first leg of an around-the-world tour. Sponsored by sporting goods magnate Albert G. Spalding, the tour included games in New Zealand, Australia, Ceylon, Egypt, Italy, France, and England.

1966 - Koufax Decides to Retire

Los Angeles Dodger southpaw Sandy Koufax announced his retirement after a season in which he won 27 games. The 30-year-old Koufax, who had won the Cy Young Award three times in five seasons, decided to quit rather than cause permanent damage to his left elbow.
