1903 - Modern World Series Begins
The first modern World Series began with the Pittsburgh Pirates visiting the Boston Pilgrims (now the Red Sox). Pittsburgh won the opener, 7-3, but Boston went on to win the best-of-nine Series, 5 games to 3.

1922 - Staleys Become Bears and Win
The Chicago Bears played and won their first game under that name, beating the Racine Legion at Racine, 6-0. The team had played in 1920 as the Decatur, Indiana, Staleys, and had been called the Chicago Staleys in 1921.

1932 - Did He or Didn't He?
Facing a two-strike count in the fifth inning of World Series Game 3, Babe Ruth gestured toward Chicago pitcher Charlie Root and then hit his second home run of the game into the centerfield bleachers. Some say Ruth called his shot; others say he was just demonstrating his contempt for Root and the Chicago fans. In any event, it was his second home run of the game, the Yankees won and went on to sweep the series.

1946 - Cards Win First NL Playoff
The National League pennant ended in a tie for the first time in history, so the Cardinals and Dodgers faced off in a best-of-three playoff, with the first game at Brooklyn's Ebbets Field. Joe Garagiola, of all people, got three hits to lead the Cards to a 4-2 victory. They won the pennant by taking the second game, 8-4.

1961 - Maris Hits 61st Home Run
Against Tracy Stallard of the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium, Roger Maris hit his 61st home run of the season, breaking Babe Ruth's 34-year-old record. The home run won the game, 1-0, and gave the Yankees a record 240 for the season.

1975 - Ali Wins Thrilla in Manila
It was called the "Thrilla in Manila." Muhammad Ali successfully defended his heavyweight championship when Joe Frazier couldn't come out for the 15th round. It was the third Ali-Frazier fight. Frazier won the first, Ali the second.

1983 - Rice Has Record 24 Catches
Little-known Jerry Rice, a junior wide receiver for Division I-AA Mississippi Valley State, set an NCAA record for all divisions by catching 24 passes against Southern University. Rice gained 219 yards on the catches.

2000 - Halter Does It All for Tigers
Shane Halter of the Detroit Tigers became the fourth player in history to play all nine positions in a game. He also led the way in a 10-9 victory, going 4-for-5 and scoring the winning run.
