1908 - Joss Beats Walsh With Perfect Game
Cleveland's Addie Joss and Chicago's Ed Walsh were matched up in a classic pitchng duel at Cleveland. Joss got the better of it by throwing a perfect game to win, 1-0. Walsh threw a four-hitter and struck out 15 in eight innings. Cleveland's winning run scored on a passed ball.

1938 - Feller Strikes Out Record 18
Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians set a record with 18 strikeouts against the Detroit Tigers, but Cleveland lost the game, 4-1.

1947 - Yogi Pinch-Hits Series Homer
Yogi Berra of the Yankees hit the first pinch home run in World Series history. The Brooklyn Dodgers won, 9-8. However, the Yankees went on to win the series in seven games.

1949 - Yankees Nip Red Sox at Wire
Entering the final game of the season, the Red Sox and Yankees were tied for first place. Their game at Yankee Stadium would decide the issue. The decision went to the Yankees, who won 5-3.

Bob Gibson set a World Series record by striking out 17 hitters in a 4-0 Game 1 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

A plane carrying Wichita State's football team to a game against Utah State crashed in the mountains near Silver Plume, Colorado, killing 31 football players and administrators.

1978 - Dent's Home Run Beats Red Sox
Light-hitting shortstop Bucky Dent hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning, giving the New York Yankees a 3-2 lead that led to a 5-4 win in their one-game pennant playoff against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Yankee lefty Ron Guidry got his 25th victory of the season against only 3 losses.
