Gil Hodges was robbed of two hits, first on Mickey Mantle's running, back-handed catch in deep left-center, then by third baseman Andy Carey's lunging stab of a line drive. Jackie Robinson hit what looked like a sure single off Carey's glove in the second inning, but shortstop Gil McDougald made a strong throw to nip Robinson at first base.
