1910 - A Lot of Help for Lajoie
Cleveland's Nap Lajoie got eight hits, seven of them questionable, in a doubleheader at St. Louis, but still fell just short of Ty Cobb in the batting race. Cobb, who sat out the last two games to protect his lead, finished at .385 to Lajoie's .384. Six of Lajoie's hits were bunt singles against a third baseman who was playing unusually deep and a seventh was awarded by the official scorer after Lajoie reached first on a wild throw by the St. Louis shortstop.

1916 - Barnes Wins First PGA Championship
Rodman Wanamaker donated the trophy and the $2,580 purse for the first championship tournament of the Professional Golfers' Association of America. Long Jim Barnes won the tournament, which was held at Siwanoy Brook Country Club in Broxville, New York.

1988 - Eckersley Saves Fourth ALCS Game
Dennis Eckersley set a League Championship Series record by saving all four games as the Oakland As swept the Red Sox to move into the World Series.

1997 - Dean Smith Decides to Retire
North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith sprang a surprise by announcing his retirement shortly before the opening of the 1997-98 season. Smith had a record of 879 wins and 254 losses and took the Tarheels to two NCAA championships.
