1914 - Miracle Braves Sweep World Series
The Boston Braves took their fourth straight victory over the Philadelphia Athletics, becoming the first team to sweep a World Series. The "Miracle Braves," as sportswriters were calling them, had won the National League pennant after being in last place, 11 1/2 games out of first, on July 15.

1960 - Mazeroski Home Run Ends Series
The Pirates won a wild World Series from the Yankees when second baseman Bill Mazeroski hit a home run leading off the bottom of the ninth for a 10-9 win in Game 7. It was the first time a Series ended with a walkoff homer. The Yankees outscored the Pirates, 55-27, in the Series and had a 7-4 lead in the eighth inning of the deciding game.

1982 - IOC Decides Thorpe Was Medalist
The International Olympic Committee voted to restore the Gold Medals that Jim Thorpe had won, in the pentathlon and decathlon, at the 1912 Olympics. The medals had been taken away when it was discovered that Thorpe had played professional baseball in 1911. They were restored to his family in January of 1983, nearly 30 years after Thorpe's death.

1984 - John Henry Goes Over $6 Million
John Henry ran and won his last race, the Ballantine's Scotch Classic at the Meadowlands, to become the first horse to win more than $6 million. The exact total was $6,597,947.
