1946 - Slaughter Keeps Running

Enos "Country" Slaughter singled to lead off the eighth inning of World Series Game 7. His St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox were tied, 3-3. Two outs later, Slaughter was still on first. But then Harry Walker hit a soft line drive into centerfield. Slaughter, running with the pitch, ignored the stop signal from his third base coach and crossed the plate with what turned out to be the winning run.

1962 - Whizzer White Named to Supreme Court

Byron R White was appointed to the U. S. Supreme Court by John F. Kennedy. Nicknamed "Whizzer" in his college football days, White was an All-American halfback at Colorado in 1937, when he led the nation in scoring and rushing yardage. He was the NFL's leading rusher with Pittsburgh in 1938 and with Detroit in 1940.

1977 - Little Hits from 67 Yards

Steve Little of Arkansas kicked a 67-yard field goal, tying the NCAA record that had been set just two weeks earlier by Russell Erxleben of Texas. The record has been tied twice since then, by Joe Williams of Wichita State in 1978 and by Tom Odle of Fort Hays State in 1988.

1983 - Five Goals in 84 Seconds

The Chicago Black Hawks and Toronto Maple Leafs combined to score the fastest five goals in NHL history. During a span of 84 seconds, Chicago scored three and Toronto two. The spree started at 16:49 of the second period and ended at 18:13. Toronto ended up winning the game, 10-8.

1986 - Mets Win Pennant in 16 Innings

The New York Mets claimed the National League pennant by winning the longest game in major league playoff history, 7-6 over Houston. Trailing 4-1, the Mets scored three in the top of the ninth to tie the game. Then they scored three more in the top of 16th. Houston came back with two in the bottom of the inning, but couldn't tie it.

1988 - Gimpy Gibson Hits Series Homer

Suffering a sprained right knee and strained left hamstring, Dodger outfielder Kirk Gibson wasn't expected to play in Game 1 of the World Series against the Oakland As. But with two outs and a runner in the bottom of the ninth and the Dodgers trailing, 4-3, Gibson came up as a pinch-hitter for Alejandro Pena against ace reliever Dennis Eckersley. On a 3-2 count, Gibson hit a slider over the rightfield wall to win the game. The underdog Dodgers went on to win the Series in five.

1997 - Driver Exceeds Speed of Sound

The land speed record exceeded the speed of sound for the first time when British driver Andy Green averaged 763.035 miles an hour on two runs across desert sands 125 miles north of Reno, Nevada. His first run was clocked at 759.333, the second at 766.109. The speed of sound under the day's atmospheric conditions was calculated at 748.111 mph.
