1921 - NFL Coach Replaced During Game
Jimmy Conzelman replaced Frank Coughlin as head coach of the Rock Island Independents. Nothing unusual about that, except that it happened during a game. A substitute came in to tell Conzelman, who played halfback, that he had just become the team's coach, as well.

1968 - Black Power at the Olympics
Tommie Smith, gold medalist in the 200-meter dash, and bronze medalist John Carlos showed up for the medal ceremony at Mexico City wearing black scarves and each wore one black glove, Smith's on the right hand and Carlos' on the left. During the national anthem, they kept their heads bowed and each raised his gloved hand with the fist clenched. They were suspended and told to leave the Olympic Village two days later.

1969 - Mets Beat Orioles in Five
The New York Mets won their first World Series in five games over the heavily-favored Baltimore Orioles. Trailing 3-0, they got a two-run homer from Donn Clendenon and a solo shot from Al Weis to tie the game and Ron Swoboda broke the tie with an eighth-inning double to win it, 5-3.
