1911 - Home Run Baker Wins Nickname

Philadelphia Athletic third baseman Frank Baker homered off New York's Christy Mathewson to tie Game 3 of the World Series at 1-1. The Athletics went on to win, 3-2. The day before, Baker's two-run home run against Rube Marquard had won the game, 3-1. He was known as "Home Run" Baker for the rest of his career.

1954 - Burk Throws 7 TD Passes

Quarterback Adrian Burk of the Philadelphia Eagles tied an NFL record by throwing seven touchdown passes in a 49-21 win over the Washington Redskins. Sid Luckman was the first to do it, in 1943. Three other quarterbacks, George Blanda, Y. A. Tittle, and Joe Kapp, have done it since.

1964 - Arkansas Ends Texas Win Streak

Ranked eighth in the country, Arkansas took a 14-0 lead over top-ranked Texas. The Longhorns came back with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but a two-point conversion try failed and Arkansas won, 14-13, ending Texas' 15-game winning streak. The Razorbacks went on to win the national championship. Among the Arkansas players were Jerry Jones, future owner of the Dallas Cowboys, and Jimmy Johnson, who would coach the Cowboys to two straight Super Bowl victories.

1974 - Oakland Wins 3rd Straight Series

Joe Rudi's home run in the seventh inning gave the Oakland As a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers and five-game victory in the World Series. That made them the only team other than the Yankees to win the World Series three years in a row.

1989 - Earthquake Disrupts World Series

A half-hour before Game 3 of the World Series was supposed to start at San Francisco's Candlestick Park, an earthquake hit the area. The quake killed 67 people and caused an estimated $7 billion in damage, and the World Series was postponed for 11 days.
