Historic Events

1906 - First Forward Pass Thrown Legally

Brad Robinson of St. Louis University threw the first known legal forward pass to Jack Schneider in a game against Carroll College of Wisconsin. The forward pass had been legalized to open up the game and, it was hoped, cut down on injuries. It certainly opened up the game for St. Louis. Coached by Eddie Cochems, the team used the pass extensively and outscored opponents, 402-11, en route to an undefeated season.

1908 - Three Errors Spoil Perfect Game

Nap Rucker of Brooklyn threw a no-hitter, struck out 14, and issued no walks in a 6-0 victory over Boston. It would have been a perfect game except for three errors by Rucker's teammates.

1913 - Two Games, Only One Run

The Phillies and Braves managed only one run in a doubleheader, tying the major league record. After Philadelphia won the first game, 1-0, the second game was a scoreless tie, called because of darkness after 10 innings.

1972 - Terrorists Attack Munich Olympics

Eight Arab terrorists attacked the Olympic Village in Munich, Germany, killed an Israeli athlete and coach, and took nine other Israelis as hostages. The hostages were ultimately killed, along with five of the terrorists and a policeman, at the Munich airport. After being suspended for a 24-hour mourning period, the Olympics went on.

1979 - Anne Meyers Signs with Pacers

All-American basketball player Anne Meyers of UCLA became the first woman to sign with an NBA team when she joined the Indiana Pacers. Meyers was cut before the regular season began.
