1934 - Paul Upstages Brother Dizzy
Dizzy Dean of the St. Louis Cardinals pitched a 3-hitter for a 13-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader. Then his brother Paul threw a no-hitter to win the second game, 3-0. Dizzy commented, "If'n Paul had told me he was gonna pitch a no-hitter, I'd of throwed one, too."

1956 - Yankees Strand 20 Runners, Lose
In a wild and crazy game at Fenway Park, the Red Sox beat the Yankees 13-9 despite Bill Skowron's 5 hits and a Mickey Mantle home run that almost went over the centerfield bleachers. The Yankees set a record by leaving 20 runners on base.

1969 - O'Neal Punt Travels 98 Yards
The New York Jets were facing fourth down on their own 1-yard line, so they brought in rookie punter Steve O'Neal. His kick sailed over Floyd Little's head, took a great roll, and came to a stop on the Denver Broncos' 1-yard line. The 98-yarder is an NFL record.

1970 - Monday Night Football Debuts
ABC's Monday Night Football went on the air with Keith Jackson doing play by play while Howard Cosell and Dan Meredith did commentary. The Cleveland Browns beat the New York Jets, 31-21, in the first Monday night game.

1980 - Monday Night Football Debuts
New York Jet quarterback Richard Todd set an NFL record by completing 42 passes in a 37-27 loss to San Francisco at Shea Stadium. Todd attempted 60 passes, completing 42 for 447 yards and 3 touchdowns.

1981 - Carlton Sets Record but Loses
Steve Carlton of the Phillies struck out 12 hitters in 10 innings to set a new National league record for career strikeouts with 3,128. However, the Expos ended up winning the game, 1-0, in 17 innings.

1986 - Spinks Beats Holmes for Title
In a battle of undefeated fighters, Michael Spinks won the heavyweight championship with a 15-round decision over Larry Holmes. Spinks was the reigning light heavyweight champion to win the heavyweight title.

1986 - Six Touchdowns Isn't Enough
Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins threw 6 touchdown passes, but it wasn't enough to beat the New York Jets, who won in overtime, 51-45. New York's Ken O'Brien threw a touchdown pass to tie the game on the last play of regulation, then hit Walker again for the game-winning TD with 2:35 elapsed in overtime. The teams combined for an NFL record 884 passing yards.
