1911 - Cy Young Gets 511th Win, 1-0
Boston's Cy Young, 44, picked up his 511th and final major league victory by beating Pittsburgh, 1-0. Pittsburgh lost only three games to Boston during the season, and two of them were shutouts by Young.

1927 - Tunney Beats Dempsey on Long Count
Jack Dempsey was given a chance to win back the heavyweight title he'd lost to Gene Tunney, and it looked as if he'd done it when he knocked Tunney down with a solid right in the 7th round . But the referee delayed the count until Dempsey went to a neutral corner, as required by a new rule, buying Tunney several precious seconds. Tunney got up at the count of nine and went on to win a decision. It was Dempsey's last fight.

1968 - Tovar Plays All 9 Positions
Cesar Tovar of the Minnesota Twins played all nine positions in a 2-1 win over the Oakland As. When Tovar pitched the first inning, the first hitter he faced was Bert Campaneris, who had played all nine positions on September 8, 1965.

1969 - Mays Hits 600th Home Run
Willie Mays became the second player, after Babe Ruth, to have 600 major league home runs when he went deep as a pinch-hitter against Mike Corkins of the San Diego Padres. Mays' San Francisco Giants won the game, 4-2.

1987 - NFL Players Go on Strike
As in 1982, the NFL Players Association went on strike after the second week of the season. This time, though, replacement players were hired and the season continued after a two-week hiatus. The strike ended after 24 days without resolution of the contract disputes.
