1894 - Aqueduct Race Track Opens
The Queens County Jockey Club opened Aqueduct Race Track in an area called Ozone Park. It was replaced in the fall of 1959 by a new, $33 million track.

After missing a month with a sore arm, Boston Red Sox pitcher Bill Dinneen returned to action by throwing a no-hitter to beat the Chicago White Sox, 2-0.

1914 - Lajoie Gets 3,000 Hit
Napoleon Lajoie of Cleveland doubled against the New York Yankees to record his 3,000th major league hit. He was the second player to do it; Cap Anson was the first.

1930 - Jones Completes Grand Slam
Bobby Jones won the U. S. Amateur championship at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania to complete the Grand Slam of Golf, as it was at the time: The U. S. and British Opens and Amateur championships.

1953 - Rechichar Hits Record 56-Yarder
Bert Rechichar of Baltimore Colts kicked a 56-yard field goal, then a National Football League record, as the Colts upset the Chicago Bears, 13-9, in the season opener.

1968 - Gibson Throws 13th Shutout
Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals pitched his 13th shutout of the season, lowering his ERA to 1.12, a National League record. Gibson beat the Houston Astros, 1-0.

1992 - Johnson Ties Record with 18 Ks
Randy Johnson of the Seattle Mariners tied the American League record for lefties by striking out 18 in a 3-2 loss to the Texas Rangers.

1996 - Bonds Joins 40-40 Club
Barry Bonds got his 40th stolen base of the season, becoming the second player to have 40 home runs and 40 steals in a season. The first was Jose Canseco.
