1913 - Amateur Ouimet Wins U. S. Open

Francis Ouimet, a 20-year-old amateur, beat two great British pros, Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, in an 18-hole playoff to win the U. S. Open. The tournament was held at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, Ouimet's hometown.

1916 - Giants' Streak Ends at 26

The New York Giants extended their record win streak to 26 in the first game of a doubleheader, then saw it end when the Braves won the second game, 8-3. Rube Benton had a no-hitter for 7 innings in the opener and ended with a 1-hit, 4-0 win.

1927 - Ruth's 60th Homer Wins Game

Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run of the season, off Tom Zachary of the Washington Senators. The 2-run shot, in the 8th inning, won the game for the Yankees, 4-2. It broke Ruth's own record of 59; 60 remained the major league record until 1961.

1939 - College Football Comes to TV

Fordham and Waynesburg played the first college football game ever televised, at Triboro Stadium in New York City. NBC used on camera to cover the game, with Bill Stern as the announcer. Bobby Brooks of Waynesburg scored the first touchdown on a 63-yard run, but Fordham went on to win, 34-7.

1972 - Clemente Gets 3,000th and Last Hit

Pittsburgh's Roberto Clemente collected his 3,000th hit, a double off Jon Matlack of the New York Mets in a 5-0 win. It was Clemente's final major league hit. He died on December 31, when a plane crashed while carrying relief supplies to Nicaragua.

1984 - Witt Pitches Perfect Game

Mike Witt of the California Angels threw a a perfect game to beat the Texas Rangers, 1-0. Witt had 10 strikeouts and used only 97 pitches.

1992 - Brett's 4th Hit is 3,000th

George Brett got his 4th hit of the game and 3,000th of his career in the 7th inning against Tom Fortugno of the California Angels. Brett retired with 3,154 hits.
