History

Originally known as the Jesse Owens International Trophy, this award was established by the International Amateur Athletic Association in 1981. It was renamed the American-International Athlete Trophy in 2002.

It goes to the outstanding international amateur athlete of the year, as chosen by a worldwide panel of sports experts.

The trophy is presented in March and is actually given for the athlete's accomplishments during the previous year.
