History
The AMC was founded as the Mid-Ohio League in 1949. The original members were Ashland, Bluffton, Cedarville, Defiance, and Findlay Colleges. Ohio Northern joined the following year.
After several membership changes, the league became the Mid-Ohio Conference in 1962.
In 1998, shortly before its 50th anniversary, the name was changed again, to the American Mideast Conference, signaling plans to expand beyond Ohio. Two Pennsylvania schools, Geneva and St. Vincent, entered the conference that year, followed by two more, Point Park and Seton Hill, in 1999.
Three New York colleges, Daemen, Roberts Wesleyan, and Houghton, entered the conference in 2001.
The AMC is now the largest conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), with 20 members in two divisions, North and South. The conference offers championships in 15 sports.
