History
The Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) was founded in 1976 with five charter members: Austin College, McMurry College, Sul Ross State University, Tarleton State University, and Trinity University.
The TIAA went through a number of membership changes over the next two decades. With the addition of two schools from outside Texas, University of the Ozarks from Arkansas and Mississippi College, the conference name was no longer appropriate.
In 1996, the TIAA was renamed the American Southwest Conference. At that time, there were nine members. That increased to 14 in 1997 with the addition of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, the University of Texas-Dallas, Schreiner College, LeTourneau University, East Texas Baptist University, and Concordia University-Austin.
